Jade, grade & authenticity

A1 grade jadeite (Grade A): natural stone, cut and polished, never dyed, bleached or polymer-filled. Grade B and C jade is acid-bleached and resin-filled (C is also dyed), which weakens it over time.

Every stone is unique, so colour and veining may differ slightly from the photos.

Jadeite and nephrite

  • Jadeite This piece

    Guatemalan, Burmese and blue pieces

  • Nephrite

    Green nephrite pieces

Both are true jade and both wear well. Jadeite resists scratches a little better; nephrite is the tougher of the two. Meters compare these stones with each other, they are not lab scores. Photos show example stones, and colour varies from piece to piece.

Care & everyday wear

Jade is one of the toughest natural stones, which makes it good for everyday wear. It can still chip if it's knocked against tile or stone, so take it off for the gym, contact sport and sleep.

  • Wipe with a soft, damp cloth, then dry it fully.
  • Keep it away from perfume, chlorine, cleaning products and ultrasonic cleaners.
  • Store it on its own so harder metals can't scratch the stone.
  • Rinse sweat off the clasp and chain after warm days and let it air dry.

In detail

Blue jadeite Cuban link necklace

The links

Every link is hand-polished, so the edges stay soft to the touch and the stone keeps its natural depth.

Blue jadeite Cuban link necklace

The finish

Polished to a soft, glassy lustre rather than a hard shine, so the colour reads deep and even in any light.

Natural green jade held up to window light

Hold it to the light

Natural jade lets light in. Hold a link up to a window and you will see the grain, small inclusions and a colour that shifts from pale to deep green. Glass and dyed stone look flat by comparison.

Those small marks are how you know it came out of the ground. No two of our pieces carry quite the same pattern.

Not all jade is equal

Two stones can look alike in a photo and be very different in the hand. Here is how natural jade compares with treated jade.

Natural, untreated Grade A jadeite

Grade A

A1 grade, what we use

Treatment
None. Natural stone, cut and polished
Colour
Natural, with even depth
Translucency & lustre
Natural translucency and a glassy lustre
Durability
As tough as the stone itself
Over time
Nothing added, so nothing to yellow or break down
Example of Grade B jadeite: bleached and resin-filled

Grade B

Treatment
Acid-bleached, then filled with polymer resin
Colour
Brighter at first, but can yellow over time
Translucency & lustre
Waxy, plastic-like lustre from the resin
Durability
Resin weakens the stone, which can crack with age
Over time
Resin can yellow and weaken with age
Example of Grade C jadeite: bleached, resin-filled and dyed

Grade C

Treatment
Bleached, polymer-filled and dyed
Colour
Dyed colour that can fade
Translucency & lustre
Flat, often uneven colour with a dull lustre
Durability
Weakened like Grade B, and can crack and fade
Over time
Dye can fade and resin can weaken

Grades A, B and C are the jadeite trade's treatment classes. They describe what has been done to the stone, not its colour or carving.

Carved links, up close

Single-piece carved

The whole bracelet is carved from one block of jade. Every link is cut free from the same stone, so there are no joins, no glue and no metal between them.

The colour and grain run unbroken from clasp to clasp. It takes longer to make and asks more of the stone, which is why these pieces take longer to make.

Rough jade boulder with a polished window

Where it starts

Jade comes out of the ground wrapped in a weathered brown skin. Cutters open a small window to read the colour inside before anything is carved.

What you wear is the stone under that skin, polished link by link.
